Move to keep Michener opened hailed as ‘monumental’

It’s being hailed as a monumental move to keep a home for developmentally disabled adults and seniors open.

So far more than 20,000 concerned Albertans have signed a petition to keep Red Deer’s Michener Centre from closing.

Members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees have been going door to door with petitions to keep the pressure up on MLAs.

President Guy Smith tells 660News it typically takes no convincing, people are signing their names almost immediately.

“It’s an easy task, people understand the issues, they want to see Michener stay open,” he explains. “Also we have over 1,000 lawn signs up.”

“We know that they care very deeply about Michener Centre,” says Smith.

He adds it’s time the Premier listened to the community and reversed her decision.

The Redford Government announced in March the closure of Michener while it was trying to trim the fiscal budget.
