Province needs new science to deal with future flooding

A number of water experts have said the province needs to update its science in order to deal with future floods properly.

The Canada research chair in water resources and climate change says nature doesn’t follow a map and there shouldn’t be hard and fast rules around the province’s flood hazard maps, which he calls “utterly invalid.”

According to The Calgary Herald, he says every home affected by last month’s flooding should be put on the province’s map, adding the best estimate of a flood plain is looking at what was under water during the recent disaster.

Climate scientists suggest natural disasters will increase in frequency and intensity in the coming years.
