The province says work is now underway to clear the Highwood River of excess gravel, sediment and debris to increase the river’s flow and help protect High River from future flooding.
The work, by Tervita, will involve scraping of gravel bars, excavation of excess silt and sediment displaced by the flood, and removal of other debris.
The minister in charge of High River’s recovery, MLA Rick Fraser said this is urgent work that needs to be done and it’s expected to be complete by September 15th.
It is expected the river scraping will result in the removal of 64,000 cubic metres of rock from the river, enough to fill 26 Olympic-size swimming pools.
The rock will be stored locally to be made available for future flood mitigation measures.
