Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne’s Liberal minority government has been put on a shorter leash by voters after losing three of five seats in provincial byelections Thursday.
The Progressive Conservatives finally have a seat in Toronto, and the NDP now have two more members.
So what does it all mean for the big picture?
On the surface, it means the official Conservative opposition is not yet the majority choice for those who don’t think the Liberals deserve to be re-elected.
They only took one of the five seats available and mainly on the strength of Doug Holyday’s political foundation in Etobicoke, with the help of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s nation.
Andrea Horwath’s NDP is the big winner with two more seats, which strengthens her hand in negotiations with the premier, leading into the next throne speech and budget.
In her first electoral test, Wynne’s Liberals did hold on to two seats; Scarborough and the former Premier Dalton McGuinty’s seat in Ottawa.
