Sky-high power prices could force Albertans to lock into contracts

Albertans are being urged to lock into more stable contracts as power prices surge in the province.

Alberta’s former consumer advocate, David Gray, says the high costs will likely shock Albertans into abandoning their regulated-rate options.

The Calgary Herald reports, average wholesale prices have spiked by 207 per cent during the second quarter of 2013, compared to the same period last year.

The average pool price for power is $123 per megawatt.

Gray says the volatility will have an especially devastating impact on seniors with a fixed income.
