Work underway at McMahon Stadium for Alberta Flood Aid

Now that the Calgary Stampeders and Saskatchewan Roughriders have left McMahon Stadium, the clean-up is underway for this weeks’ Alberta Flood Aid concert.

Saturday and Sunday are cleanup days at the venue, before the real work begins on Monday morning.

That’s when the protective plastic covering goes over the artificial turf, and they set up the stage.

Assistant Stadium Manager Don Phelps said there’s a ton of man power, but it’s worth it.

“It takes a whole lot and we’re relying on some volunteers and some people that are in the actual business, but are still volunteering their time,” he said. “So you’re looking at 200-300 people in the thick of things and a lot of extra hours on the part of the regular staff for sure.”

Crews will be working round the clock Monday to Thursday morning to get the covering and stage in place and Phelps says they’re looking at a maximum capacity of 30,000 people.

The last time a concert of this size happened at McMahon Stadium was in 2008 for Monsters of Rock.

In the meantime, the Stamps are practicing at Shouldice Arena.
