City to announce expert panel on flood prevention

It’s been 52 days since the Calgary flooding, but much of the city infrastructure is almost back to full strength.

Auto transportation should be fully functioning this week and almost all pathways are operating.

But the question remains, how do we prepare for the future and prevent damage from happening again?

The City’s Director of Recovery Operations, Gord Stewart, said the names of an expert panel on flood mitigation will be announced this week.

“Looking at what are the things that we need to do on a larger scale to prevent these kind of occurrences in the future?” he said.

“We do see this as a very significant initiative as an opportunity to engage in the community, to talk to experts who have experienced these kinds of things in other countries, so bringing a lot that together.”

With another info session planned for this week, Stewart added the most common question they’ve been getting from residents so far has been how to rebuild homes and infrastructure.

As for community morale, he said Calgarians took a big hit collectively, staggered and kept right on moving.

Thursday’s session is at Christ Church on 3602 8 Street S.W. at 4:00 p.m.
