‘Leisure Sickness’: how to avoid feeling miserable during your summer vacation

You look forward to your vacation for weeks, maybe even months, and then you spend the whole time feeling miserable…

It’s being dubbed ‘leisure sickness’, and one specialist says we can feel better during our downtime, if we just slow down and take care of our bodies.

Stress and Wellness Expert Beverly Beuermann-King says, it’s often your body responding to being in overdrive for too long.

She tells 660News, work-life balance is key, and like a car, your body needs maintenance.

“Do you have downtime throughout each day?  So, are you taking your lunch breaks, are you getting up from your desk and checking out and doing things that are relaxing? Do you have fun things in your life that energize you or motivate you?” she says.

It could also be you aren’t taking enough time off; according to a study by Expedia, 40 per cent of Canadians feel deprived of vacation time.

Beuermann-King advises against using alcohol as a coping mechanism, and focus on what you are eating and whether you’re getting a good night sleep.

She says, that way, when you have a few days off, you won’t spend it with aches and pains, and can sit back and enjoy.
