City trying new crosswalk paint

The city of Calgary has started a new painting project, in order to save some time and money.

Road crews are trying out five different paints, on a number of crosswalks,  to see which one works best to last during the city’s interesting climate.

Sean Somers with the city’s transportation department tells 660News the lines have been painted on 17th Avenue between Macleod Trail and 14th Street SW.

“What we are going to do is fast forward to a year from now, we’ll have the ability to see which of those paints has lasted, which of those paints have been the most durable specifically over the course of winter and that will help us determine what choice to make in product going forward,” says Somers.

Each year, road crews have to repaint crosswalk lines that have faded and Somers hopes finding the “right” paint will change that to every 3 or 4 years.
