Some AHS Execs to evade expense claim repayment

Some Alberta Health executives who made lavish expense claims may not have to pay back the money.
The province says they will go after money doled out in the last two years, but may have no recourse for expenses paid out earlier than that, and it doesn’t seem the government will take legal action to recoup the remaining dollars.
That’s according to the Minister of Health, Fred Horne, who along with his provincial cohorts, have been receiving legal council from an Edmonton-based law firm.
The firm is suggesting the statute of limitations has passed and under the Limitations Act, Alberta Health Services can’t recover claims more than two years old.
It would be possible to take the former executives to court, but the firm, who has no previous ties to the province or AHS, doesn’t think they would have much success recouping the money and Minister Horne doesn’t think spending further funds on a lawsuit is worth it.
Horne says, while he’s disappointed some former AHS employees were able to evade repayment of outrageous expense claims, he remains focused on taking action to ensure this doesn’t happen again.
