Redford government makes changes to flood policies

The Alberta Government is no longer going to put warnings on land titles for homes in flood danger zones.
Now, the Redford Tories say the real estate industry will ensure potential home buyers get the information they need before buying property at risk of flooding.
Prospective home buyers can also check properties on Alberta’s flood-hazard mapping website.
This comes just eight weeks following the worst flood in provincial history, and after hearing input from Albertans impacted by the June flood, the government is making changes to the flood policies.
Associate Minister of Regional Recovery, Rick Fraser, has seen the devastation of the flood first hand across the province, especially in hard hit areas like High River.
Fraser says homeowners who live on floodways and received monetary help this summer must still have that noted on their land titles, along with a warning that future funding won’t be made available should a disaster hit.
Homeowners will also now be able to install an exterior switch, to disconnect power themselves, connecting the meter and household panel and also be able to choose from disposable materials during basement construction to make repairs and rebuilding easier.
The amendments to the policies come after 25 people applied to have their houses torn down and seven permits have already been granted, according to The Calgary Herald.
More than 3,000 homes were badly damaged by the flood in our city.
