It’s been two months since the Bow and Elbow rivers flooded our city but anyone floating down either waterway or using local pathways will still notice tons of debris in the water or on the banks.
The city says they had to wait until the water went down considerably before checking out all the debris and have now identified more than 100 sites along both rivers where things need to be removed.
Andy Hughes with the city tells 66Nnews, what kind of stuff they are looking at.
“You know trees that have been washed downstream, construction materials such as timber, we have a couple of dumpsters in the river,” he explains. “The erosion of the riverbanks has also exposed some things that were not previously in the river. An example of that would have been the timber wood piles underneath the Sunnyside LRT bridge that we took steps to remove.”
Hughes says the clean-up on the Elbow will begin in the next few weeks with the Bow River to follow.
