SW building evacuated after pepper spray released

A rare incident for fire crews in the southwest Saturday night, clearing an entire building because someone had used pepper spray.

About a dozen residents in some apartments in the 1800 block of 16th Street had to leave their homes just before 11:30p.m.

Several people were having trouble breathing.

Fire Battalion Chief, Allan Ball, tells 660News, they actually shut down the whole street because they didn’t want to take any chances.

“It generates quite a bit of discomfort. It’s an oil based product so it can really penetrate people’s clothing and stuff, and it’s pretty nasty stuff,” says Ball.

He adds, everyone was allowed back in the building by about 1:30a.m. Sunday morning.
