Man in critical condition following SUV-train collision

A man is in critical condition following a collision between a train and SUV late Friday night in the northeast.

“A few minutes before midnight, a vehicle with two occupants inside was driving on Memorial Drive, east of 68th Street and attempted to beat a train at a train crossing and unfortunately it didn’t make it in time,” Duty Inspector Mike Tillotson tells 660News. “It was struck before clearing the tracks.  One of the occupants was taken to hospital in life threatening condition.  It’s not known at this point whether speed or alcohol were factors, but we’ll certainly be looking into that.”

The other man in the vehicle is believed to have minor injuries, while no one on the train suffered injuries.

The intersection was shut down overnight as the CPS Traffic Unit conducted its investigation, but has since re-opened.

At this point, no charges have been laid.
