Block parties becoming a trend in Calgary

How’s your community spirit?

Does it match the atmosphere in, say, McKenzie Towne?

In recent years, block parties have become fashionable in Calgary, and McKenzie Towne has led the way, according to stats from the city.

The southeast community has held 15 such affairs in the last three years.  Next on the list are Sundance and Tuscany with 14 each.

Some of the neighbourhood gatherings have been going on for decades.

In Parkdale, 53 home-owners have been putting on a pig roast for more than 30 years.

It happens every Father’s Day weekend on Parkglen Crescent. The Calgary Herald reports it’s a tradition dating back to 1979 when three couples — new to the neighbourhood — looked for a way to get to know their neighbours.
