Alberta population to hit 4M

Alberta’s rapidly growing population is set to hit four million people this year, exceeding an earlier forecast by the province.

More than 27,000 people moved to Alberta from other parts of Canada and abroad in the first quarter of 2013.

Newcomers to Alberta are also increasingly choosing cities, with more settling in Calgary than Edmonton.

The Calgary Herald reports while the growth brings benefits like more workers to stimulate the economy, it’s also putting pressure on the province’s physical and social infrastructure.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi says added revenue doesn’t come close to paying for new roads, transit and other public facilities in the city.
