Improving CTrain service is anything but cheap

The city is being urged to spend tens of millions of dollars to replace its aging fleet of LRT cars.
According to a new report, the bulk of the city’s more than 70 Siemens U2 cars, which were purchased more than 30 years ago, should be replaced by the end of the decade.
Alderman Gord Lowe tells 660News service disruptions are increasing because of more mechanical failures and repairs.
With the price tag to replace a single LRT car at $4-million, the final bill is pegged at $312-million.
Very soon, the city will announce which company it will contract to supply 50 new LRT cars, but less than half of those will be used for replacement; the bulk of them are already slated to help expand service beginning in 2015.
