Migrating workers aren’t putting down roots in AB: report

Getting people to move to Alberta to work, and stay is becoming a major challenge for the province.
A Statistics Canada study finds only one in four of the thousands who have migrated here from other parts of the country, have decided to make Alberta their primary residence.
Most still list their home province on their tax returns.
ATB Financial Chief Economist Todd Hirsch tells 660News, we need to make Alberta a place where people will put down roots.
“I think in the past we maybe haven’t always done that,” he says. “We haven’t paid as much attention to, you know, and what kind of cities are we building? Is the infrastructure, and the parks, and the recreational facilities; are they attractive and appealing?”
Especially since we have more competition now; with parts of Atlantic Canada, like Newfoundland, seeing strong job creation.
In 2008, at the height of a time where people were migrating around Canada, there were 133,000 out-of-province workers in Alberta.
