After five months of intense training, 23 new constables received their new badges in a ceremony Friday.
They will now hit the streets of Calgary for their next phase of training where they are paired up with Police Training Officers.
Ryan Preece, an Academic Sergeant with the Calgary Police Service, said this newest class of graduates is an especially diverse group.
“We’ve got an ex-pastor for one, we have an individual who escaped with his family at quite a young age from Iran, we have a young lady who worked for Alberta Parks, one of our quite successful recruits used to sell farm equipment,” said Preece.
He said, being a diverse group, they are all very accepting of new policing methods rather than traditional enforcement.
“A lot of the community policing principals, as they relate to enforcement nature of policing, they’ve really grasped the concept, are very open minded and extremely excited,” said Preece.
According to Preece, diversity among CPS graduates is not an anomaly which he attributes partly to a reflection of the community, as well as an effort by CPS to promote the service outside the city limits.
