Calgary Labour Council pushes for more worker safety

The Calgary and District Labour Council is calling for more protection for workers, after two attacks on Fas Gas employees in recent weeks.

One of the incidents involved a gas worker in Red Deer being shot in the face.

President Alexander Shevalier tells 660News, while there are safety plans in place for people working alone, like panic buttons; they are still being left on their own.

“While all of these may be sort of, preventative measures, they ultimately can’t replace another person being there,” he says. “And that’s what these two incidents highlight. What would have happened if these two workers were killed? We hope that never happens, but you know, what’s the result?”

The Labour Council is also pushing for more health and safety inspections.

The push comes after the Alberta Federation of Labour made a similar plea, highlighting protection for foreign workers who often get the worst shifts.

The two men injured in recent robberies in Red Deer and Okotoks are recent arrivals from the Philippines.
