Calgary communities calling for speed limit reductions

Two campaigns have been launched in Calgary to reduce the speed limit in residential areas to 30kms/hr.

The ’30 For Sunnyside’ campaign along with another in Mount Royal have been started for concerned residents who want change.

The Mount Royal campaign is spearheaded by Jodi Morel, who decided to take action after witnessing a fatal crash this past summer involving a 12 year old boy.

Morel says the injuries sustained by the boy were extensive and she assumed the SUV must have been travelling at a considerable speed, much greater than the speed limit.

She says she was quickly assured that in fact what she witnessed was indicative of 50km/hour and that if this is what happens at 50k, then that’s simply not okay!

The ’30 For Sunnyside’ campaign says according to the World Health Organization, pedestrians struck by an automobile travelling at 30 km/h or lower are 90% likely to survive.

They say a reduction in posted speed limits to 30 km/h will drastically improve the safety of all vulnerable road users and help to avoid collisions in the first place.
