Canadians are denied new medicine for months, if not years, due to federal government approvals, while similar approvals are provided earlier and faster in the United States.
That’s according to a new study from the Fraser Institute.
The Institute’s Director of Health Policy Studies, Nadeem Esmail, says if we had a process similar to the U.S. between 2005 and 2012, Canadian patients would’ve had access to at least 150 new drugs a full year before they finally debuted in our country.
“Some of this is already happening in Europe, where you have the European Medicines Agency providing regulatory reviews for certain types of drugs for all of the European Union,” says Esmail.
He adds the Canadian government needs to recognize it has a relatively small market, and an expensive regulatory process.
