Child injured by possible air-powered gun

Calgary police are seeking answers after a nine-year-old boy was injured by a projectile that may have been fired from an air-powered gun.

The child was playing in his backyard on Dover Crescent S.E. on Saturday night, when he heard a loud bang and was hit by something.

He ran inside to his parents, where they stripped off his shirt and discovered a small wound in his upper abdomen.

The boy was rushed to hospital with non life-threatening injuries, but doctors were unable to remove the object from his abdomen because the procedure would be too intrusive, but he is back with his parents and doing well.

Despite an an extensive search of the area and door-to-door interviews, officers have been unable to confirm what injured the child or who may be responsible.

In September, police issued a safety alert, saying BB, pellet, and other air-powered guns pose a threat to public safety, and tie up police resources because they can be mistaken for the real thing.

It’s against the law to fire any weapon within city limits, and to transport an air-powered gun with a round of ammunition in the chamber.
