The Calgary Fire Department has issued a city wide Level 3 fire ban.
That means all open flames with the exception of internal household fireplaces and liquid fuel barbecues are prohibited.
Battalion Chief Ernie Molineaux tells 660News bans are not uncommon this time of year.
“With the high winds we have had over the last week and just the mature grass, the length of the grass, the dry leaves blowing around it’s just a very bad time of year and this isn’t unusual for this time of year, it happens more often than not” says Molineaux.
Molineaux says a grassfire in these kinds of conditions can spread hundreds of yards a minute.
