It’s like Christmas Day for hockey fans in our city: the Calgary Flames open their home season Sunday evening at the Scotiabank Saddledome as they take on the Vancouver Canucks.
A Home Opener offers a new beginning for every team in the National Hockey league and despite seeing the Flames finish 13th in the Western Conference last season, 2013-2014 has fans very optimistic.
“I think it’s going to be a surprising season,” says Jim, who came to watch the game with his wife, Laura. “I think a lot of people are expecting them to flounder, but so far so good.”
“I think the Flames are going to do awesome this season,” says Mitch. “They got a lot of great new players.”
The young roster has so many new faces, quite a few fans have a hard time naming anyone on team.
“I don’t know much about any of the new players and you know, I don’t think I can name any of them,” laughs Laura.
“The term rebuild is great, I like it,” says Carl. “The team used to be built around one player and now, it’s built around an entire team,” he adds.
The fresh faces are giving a renewed sense of hope that the ‘C of Red’ will have something to smile about come the post-season.
A tailgate party kicked off the season outside the Saddledome with live music, a beer garden, and a special appearance from former Flames superstar, Theo Fleury.
