An estimated 7,000 Calgarians converged on Southcentre mall Sunday for the 2013 CIBC Run for the Cure.
Those involved are in it for their loved ones or to give back after their own battle, or both.
For Victoria David, the event and the organization behind it, were there for her when she needed support the most.
She was 27 when she found a lump and a few weeks later she found out it was stage 2 breast ancer.
She was in school at the time, studying at the University of Oxford in England, but returned to Canada for treatment, where she underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
It was during her treatment that she took part in her very first Run for the Cure.
She tells 660News she was very grateful for the support.
“You sort of become part of a club and no one wants to be part of that club, but when you’re in, you kind of understand things that people who aren’t in the club, they don’t really understand. People around me were incredibly supportive but sometimes they wouldnt really necessarily understand some of the issues.”
Four years later, she is this year’s survivor spokesperson for an event that has become very dear.
It’s estimated that 23,800 women and 200 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in Canada this year.
