Distress Centre sees increase in calls post flood

The Distress Centre has seen a huge increase in calls, since June’s flooding.

Calls to the crisis line have jumped 4 per cent in the past few months and people using the 211 line are up 25 per cent.

Paul Bartel with The Distress Centre tells 660News the content of the calls has also changed.

“Suicide related calls have gone from a normal level of about 7 per cent with us into the 8 and 1/2 per cent range,” says Bartel.

Bartel says there is a greater need for these services since the flooding on June 20th.

He says the biggest challenge faced by the centre is making sure they have enough staff on hand to answer the calls.
