A 58-year-old man is recovering in Foothills Hospital in stable condition with non life-threatening injuries after a five car crash in Calgary’s south end early Saturday morning.
Robin Peoples from the Traffic Unit says three vehicles were stopped at the intersection on southbound McLeod Trail at 71st Avenue, shortly before 4:00a.m., when an SUV traveling southbound crashed into the vehicles from behind.
The three stopped vehicles were hit with such force that they were pushed forward further southbound, striking a fourth vehilce on 71st Avenue.
Pieces from the wreckage were scattered across the intersection, forcing its closure for about three hours while city police conducted a collision reconstruction.
The man recovering in hospital was the driver of the first vehicle hit by the oncoming SUV and the driver of the SUV is in custody, and charges are pending.
The Calgary Police Traffic Investigation Unit continues to investigate the multi-vehicle collision and speed and alchohol are believed to be factors in the crash.
