Students want affordable housing and improved voting accessibility

Affordable housing and voting accessibility are the critical issues for the University of Calgary Students Union, heading into Monday’s civic election.

VP External with the Union, Conner Brown says he’s aware of students moving into unsafe secondary suites because it may be the only affordable option.

“It has been a common trend and a problem in years past, and we’re hoping the city can make some steps to remedy that,” says Brown.

Brown adds he also would like to see candidates push for a change to the election rules, so it’s not as difficult for students to register to vote.

“I think the issue really resides in the students finding that official source of mail because, a lot of students don’t have a piece of mail from the government, don’t have their car registered, or something like that, just because students are typically moving around quite a lot,” says Brown.

He says he has met with the candidates of Ward 1 to discuss these concerns.
