Votes to be re-tallied in Ward One race

There will be a recount in Ward One.

Officials will begin recounting the ballots at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Ward Sutherland was declared the winner Monday night by a margin of only 85 votes.

Returning Officer Barb Clifford says the decision was made because the number of rejected ballots is higher than the number of votes Sutherland won by.

There are no hard feelings; Ward Sutherland says he has trust in the system, and he’s hoping he’ll get a chance to commit to his platform as a part of city council.

“Overall, I’m just really excited and hopefully we can get this process over as quickly as possible, and I’m looking forward to the next four years,” he says.

His opponent Chris Harper says the split shows they both had solid campaigns.

“You know, I think the closeness of it is probably surprising to both of us, but I think it shows that we both offered a different vision of where our communities could go, and obviously those visions were compatible with almost, between the two of us,  50 per cent of our supporters,” he says.

Harper says even if he doesn’t make it into council, he’s going to keep following the business at City Hall.
