Still no S.E. Stoney Trail ringroad

Three weeks after it was supposed to open, there’s still no firm timeline for when the southeast leg of Stoney Trail will be ready for traffic.

Alberta Transportation Minister Ric McIver tells 660News, the contractor is still completing final touches on the stretch of road from Macleod Trail to 17th Avenue, S.E. and they are awaiting an independent safety audit.

He says he’s anxious for the opening too, “When we determine that the level of construction meets what’s required in the contract for the safety audits, then of course we’ll do what we
really want to do and open it up for traffic to Calgarians”.

McIver says the contractor has been fined $70,000 a day, about $1.6 million so far, for every day that the road remains closed.

The $769-million project has been three years in the making and was set to open at the beginning of October.
