Homeless shelters under pressure

With the housing crunch in Calgary, and the cold moving in, homeless shelters in the city are worried there won’t be enough room for everyone who needs a place to stay.

Many places are already near capacity.

Louise Gallagher with the Calgary Homeless Foundation tells 660News, shelters are going into winter emergency mode.

“There’s extra funding for beds; so they will be hiring additional staff so that they can accommodate the additional people that they are going to be seeing,” she says. “You know, it’s always hard to gage, will we see more? With the floods, we anticipate more people coming in but we just don’t have a concrete number on it.”

Gallagher says more people are coming to Calgary for work, and finding they can’t afford a place to live.

Affordable housing is also becoming more difficult to access; a once 30 day wait. has turned into 90 days.
