School and playground zones could soon be harmonized

The Alberta government is tabling legislation Tuesday afternoon that will give municipalities more control over things like playground zones.

The legislation will also give the province authority to designate lane use on provincial highways for things like bus traffic or high occupancy vehicles.

Bill 32, Enhancing Safety on Alberta Roads Act is expected to become law before the end of the fall sitting of the legislature.

The Vice President of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association, Calgary Councillor Jim Stevenson, tells 660News he’s happy to see the province finally take action on something that has been a problem for decades.

Stevenson who represents Ward 3 in Calgary, also hopes during the streamlining process, they will be able to look at dedicate lanes for school buses and parents who are dropping off or picking up their youngsters.

Ward 10 Councillor Andre Chabot says as soon as Bill 32 becomes law, the matter will be turned over to a city committee which will also solicit public input.

Both Chabot and Stevenson hope to see harmonized school and playground operations in effect before next fall.

Don Szarko with the Alberta Motor Association applauds the initiative, as long as the province’s some 340 municipalities work together to standardize the various change.
