How much is too much when it comes to protecting our children?
St. Basil Elementary and Junior High School in Calgary, has ditched the honour roll.
An official tells the National Post, the academic awards can hurt the self-esteem and pride of kids who don’t receive a certificate.
There was a lot of shock and disbelief, when 660News spoke to Calgary commuters.
“I believe in the honour roll system. How else are you supposed to succeed, if you don’t get told to succeed,” one woman said. “Crazy? I think it’s insane. How do you say you’re better, and you can do better, if there is no better?”
She’s not the only one; most say they can’t find any merits in the plan.
Kelly can see both sides of the argument; but still can’t get behind the idea.
“There has to be some kind of goal, or reason to try harder,” he says.
The policy so far just reflects St. Basil’s, and it doesn’t belong to the Catholic school board as a whole.
