Construction has started for a building that will change our city’s skyline forever.
In four more years, the Bow tower won’t be the only tall structure in western Canada.
A ground breaking ceremony was held Wednesday afternoon, to turn the sod for the new home of Cenovus Energy.
The 2.4 million square foot project will include two towers, the east, mainly housing Cenovus Energy and another tower to include restaurant and retail space.
With hard hats on and shovels in hand, the Mayor along with those from Brookfield Properties and Cenovus Energy turned the sod at the construction site, located between 6th and 7th Avenues and 1st and 2nd Streets downtown.
The 247 meter high east building will become the tallest structure in western Canada come 2017.
But, the spectacular structure almost didn’t get built, Mayor Nenshi says Brookfield came to the city with a problem and he helped speed up the permit process.
“We’re trying new ways of speeding up the process. This is the marque example of that pilot, we’re really excited about it but, there’s been many others. Another example is a new residential neighbourhood in the NE called ‘Cityscape’ where we also pulled out the stops to figure out how to make it work and work more quickly.”
The project will also include a pavilion named in honour of the Director of Brookfied, Jim Gray.
