Free limo rides causing a stir in Calgary

A new limousine app is offering to cover the cost of your limo ride over the next few days.

The Uber App — started in San Francisco — connects passengers with drivers for hire but, owners of the app have issues with city regulations.

A blog post by the company calls a law that requires drivers to charge a minimum of almost $80 minimum a ride “antiquated.”

Until Sunday — with a $5 donation to The Calgary Foundation — you can test out the app and the ride is for free.

But, it’s only a preview; the company says until regulations are changed, they can’t operate in the city.

Uber spokesperson Andrew Noyes tells 660News, there has to be a better way.

“It works against the consumer interest and works against the community and driver interest as well,” says Noyes.

Chief Licensing officer Marc Hallet argues if you want the enhanced service of a limo, you have to pay more.

“You need to sit with these people, see what they have to offer as we’ve done in the past. Meet within those barriers and parameters of the by-law and go from there,” says Hallet.
