Stampede tunnel, track officially open

A new tunnel and track has officially opened at Stampede Park.

A ceremony took place Thursday afternoon to finally celebrate the finished product, which took $3.4 million to construct.

The money is part of $25-million the Government of Canada is contributing to the revitalization of the Calgary Stampede grounds.

Calgary Stampede CEO Vern Kimball says it’s extremely satisfying after the flood delayed their original plans.

“Last June, we were supposed to gather here and officially open our new tunnel and reconfigured infield and track, but even in hip waders that would have been difficult,” he said. “So four months later, we’re here to acknowledge and thank our public sector partners for their support.”

The completion of the project will mean more space to support agricultural programming at the grounds, and provide better access to the Agrium Western Event Centre, currently under construction.
