Calgary City Council back to work

It might sound rather boring, but it’s very important.

After being sworn in a week ago, Calgary’s Mayor and 14 Councillors get to work.

Ward 3 Councillor Jim Stevenson tells 660News before tackling the issues impacting Calgarians, they need to figure out who’s going to sit on the various city committees.

Stevenson says the debate over who does what can get rather emotional.

“Sometime people don’t get the committees they want or don’t get chairs of the committees they want. Some years it’s pretty smooth other years it gets pretty wild.” says Stevenson.

Stevenson says in council chambers they will get verbal updates on a number of things including the southwest ring road proposal.

Before the month is out, the 2014 civic budget will also be tabled.

Meanwhile, it looks like the recent name change for elected representatives to City Hall is causing a little confusion.

On Monday morning, Mayor Naheed Nenshi put forward a possible solution to make sure he and others call the various ward reps Councillors, instead of Alderman.

The suggestion followed a verbal ‘boo boo’ by the Mayor as he was explaining what he and his colleagues were about to do.

“Then we will spend the rest of the day making Councillor and citizen appointments and committees and I know Alderman Chabot has a question… Councillor Chabot has a question. We should get a swear jar for that” said Nenshi.

The Mayor thinks the name change from Alderman to Councillor will take a little time for everyone to add to enshrine in their vocabulary.
