The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada is in Calgary Monday and Tuesday hearing stories of survival from First Nations people affected by residential schools and their legacies.
Commission Chair, Justice Murray Sinclair, tells 660News having survivors share their stories is a part of the healing process for them and a means of letting the truth out.
He says many Canadians had never even heard of the schools before Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s apology in 2008.
“They also thought the reason why there are so many social problems in the Aboriginal community is because there is something wrong with the people. In reality, it is because of the legacy of the schools. It’s the way people have been treated, it’s the legislative oppression along with the social oppression that Aboriginal people have experienced,” says Sinclair.
This is the final community hearing for the commission leading up to a national event in Edmonton in March of 2014.
