It’s $245-million, it will be 278,000 square feet, and it will be the flagship of the city’s cultural facilities once it’s complete.
Calgary Municipal Land Corporation announced Tuesday morning; they’ve secured the funding and found the architects for the city’s new central library.
There were two conditions every architect competing for this had to meet; every design had to inspire Calgarians and it had to deal with unusual site conditions (9th Avenue and 3rd Street S.E. mainly the LRT).
Out of those who applied, two were chosen: Snohetta, and partner firm, DIALOG.
The property needs a lot of work; therefore construction won’t start until the summer of 2015.
“So, what it will look like will be anybody’s guess, but lots of spaces for people to create, lots of spaces for people to build community, and lots of spaces to be alone, and read and do those other things,” Board Chair Janet Hutchinson said.
While the design isn’t ready yet, two architects tell 660News, it will need to blend in with the facade of City Hall.
The anticipated open date of the library is in 2018.
