Calgary students get crash course in distracted driving

A new survey suggests drivers aren’t getting the message when it comes to distracted driving.

In a recent poll commissioned by the Ford Motor Company, nearly all teens and their parents admitted to having engaged in some form of distracted driving.

Ford and city police set up an obstacle course at Henry Wisewood High School in the southwest, but the obstacles were inside the car.

Grade 12 student Wesley had just completed the course, unaware of just how many pylons he’d just crushed.

“The instructor was talking to me, he was reading out a text that I had to type and it was kind of hard to do it at the same time while driving, while turning and steering. So, it was a little bit harder than I expected,” he says.

CPS Constable Jim Lebedev hopes putting these students this road test, will send a message that appears to so far not be getting through.

“It’s the texting and taking your eyes off the road that is incredibly dangerous. I’m sorry, but people just aren’t getting that message, and I don’t want to see people start to have to die, in order to get that message out there,” he says.
