TORONTO – A growing number of Toronto city councillors are calling on embattled Mayor Rob Ford to step aside after his bombshell admission Tuesday that he smoked crack cocaine.
Coun. Paula Fletcher said Ford should “take a medical leave and step aside.”
Coun. John Filion agrees, saying Ford should “take a leave of absence and get his life in order.”
Coun. Denzil Minnan-Wong — who is a member of the mayor’s executive committee — said he thinks Ford has “lost the moral authority to lead.”
That’s echoed by Coun. Jaye Robinson, who said Ford “does not have a shred of credibility” and that Ford has made Toronto “the butt of jokes internationally.”
Ford admitted Tuesday he smoked the drug around a year ago while he was in what he calls one of his “drunken stupors.” He also said he’s sorry for his “mistakes” but added that he will not step down.
Meanwhile, city hall will try to get on with its daily business, Wednesday. The budget committee — chaired by Coun. Frank Di Giorgio — is set to meet at 9:30 a.m. Click here to read the agenda.
The mayor does not sit on the committee, but can attend if he wants. However, his brother, Coun. Doug Ford does, and is expected to attend, along with five other councillors.
Coun. Ford has not issued a comment since his brother’s confession.
