People displaced after SW building fire

No one was injured, but two families are out of their homes after a two alarm blaze in the city’s southwest.

Crews arrived to the building on South Hampton Drive just before 11:00 a.m. Thursday morning and with the amount of fire and smoke from the two units, a second alarm and further assistance had to be called.

Carol Henke with Calgary Fire tells 660News, due to structural issues as a result of the fire, fire crews weren’t able to go into the unit of origin.

“As a result, they needed to start an aggressive exterior attack. The fire vented itself through the roof and so aerials were set up to put water on the fire from above as well,” said Henke.

She adds, it’s still unclear as to how this fire began.

“Investigators were on scene early, interviewing witnesses and the people from the units. Now, because it’s still not safe to go into the building the investigation of the origin and cause of the fire has not yet started inside the building. Fire crews continue to work to make sure there is no fire extension,” she said.

The blaze forced people and two dogs out of eight units in the condo building.

The Calgary Emergency Management Agency – or CEMA – is assisting the two families who have been displaced as a result of the fire.
