The Calgary Police are once again cracking down on distracted drivers on city streets, but the latest blitz is taking a slightly different approach.
After a lot of complaints and concerns from the general public as well as officers on the street, about drivers engaging in other activities while behind the wheel, The CPS Traffic Unit is now taking a concerted effort to curb poor driving habits.
From November 25th to December 1st officers will be patrolling busy roads looking for distracted drivers, however this time in addition to a uniformed officers, members in plainclothes will also be on the lookout.
Sgt. Michael Watterston says it’s a new strategy for Calgary.
“We’ve seen some other jurisdication that have employed you know the the construction worker, the homeless person on the side of the road, we are not going to go to that extent What we want to focus on, is when that vehicle is in motion and you are in those distracted activities we are going to engage you,” said Watterston.
It’s not just cellphones police are cracking down on.
It’s use of a GPS, I-Pod or MP3 or anything that takes your eyes off the road.
The fine for distracted driving is $172.
