Mother charged in son’s death

Calgary police have arrested a woman more than eight months after the death of her seven year old son.

In March, emergency crews were called to a basement suit in the 900 block 17th Avenue SW after somebody reported the boy was having a seizure.

He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.  The homicide unit was called in because of his condition.

Charges of criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide the necessities of life are now pending against the boy’s 44-year-old mother.

They allege the boy, who lived with his mother, was suffering from a treatable infection but was not taken for medical attention despite his deteriorating condition.

Instead, he was given holistic remedies and was bedridden for up to 10 days before his death.

An autopsy revealed he died as a result of a strep infection, which is often treatable with medication such as penicillin.

The suspect’s name has not been released because she has not yet faced a judge.
