Calgary’s Jewish community marks its brightest celebration of the season with Hanukkah starting Wednesday night.
Hanukkah is marked with the lighting of the menorah, and it has become a very public celebration in our city.
An estimated 15,000 community menorahs will light up for the next eight nights in cities around the world.
Two of them here in Calgary; where 14 Street commuters will notice a 17 foot menorah at the gates of Heritage Park.
Thursday at 5:30pm, Calgary’s official community menorah lighting takes place at City Hall for the 25th straight year.
Rabbi Manachem Matusof says the tradition was first embraced by Mayor Al Doer over two decades ago.
“He said, how could we not be part of the world effort of bringing more light and just open the door? Since then, it became the Calgary Community menorah,” he said.
