Calgary police believe a man electrocuted at a power substation Wednesday morning in the southeast was trying to steal copper wire.
Enmax crews made the discovery at the substation just before 2 a.m., and EMS later pronounced the man dead on scene.
Police say he was found with bolt cutters in his possession.
The 40-year-old is not being identified until next of kin are contacted.
There’s still no word on how the man managed to get into the facility.
Staff Sgt. Jason Bobrowich said Enmax has upgraded security significantly since copper wire theft has become a criminal trend worldwide.
“Right from signage to onsite video, roving patrols, and to reducing the value of the copper on site, by removing copper product and replacing it with copper weld,” he explained.
Sgt. Bobrowich added, the case is not unprecedented.
In 2008, in Calgary, there was a death related to copper theft at the old General Hospital site in an underground utility vault.
Police have laid over 157 charges over the past year related to the theft of copper wire.
