Wind chill warning ends for Calgary, but leaves aftereffects

Calgary’s wind chill warning may be over, but the extreme cold has caused many to reorganize or even cancel their weekend plans.

The ski and snowboard hills at Canada Olympic Park remains closed since Monday and Saturday was the day they were supposed to reopen, but it’s still too dangerous, especially if someone was to get stuck on a lift and then stranded in the weather.

Park spokesperson Dale Oviatt said they do hope to reopen the hills at noon Sunday, but as always, that could change.

“It comes down to the forecast, so we’ll have to re-evaluate things Sunday morning,” he said, adding to close the hill for a week is a big hit to business, but they’re prepared.

“We know every year that we’re going to have to close between five and 10 days during a given year, we never know how long, obviously this is a little bit earlier than normal, usually it’s January that we have to close for a couple of days, so hopefully we’re just going to wait for it now and we’ll get some good weather coming out the rest of the season,” he said.

Other indoor areas of COP remained opened Saturday, including the gymnastics centre and the Canada Sports Hall of Fame.
