Calgary EMS experiences red alert

The slippery streets combined with an unusually high number of other calls created a “red alert” situation for Calgary EMS, Monday morning.

The situation meant they experienced ambulance shortages.

At times, no ambulance was available, but EMS spokesman Stuart Brideaux stresses all calls for help are being answered.

He says paramedics can drive an EMS SUV to a scene to assess the situation and then decide their next move.

Between 5 and 10 a.m., police had been to nearly 50 crashes, 4 involved injuries.

Police say there have been nearly 300 hundred crashes on city streets since early Sunday morning.

That pretty much sums up the battle cry of city road crews, which continue to drive around plows and sanders looking to improve traction on the major routes.

City roads spokesperson, Jessica Bell tells 660News, because of Monday’s snow, they have reset their seven day maintenance winter program, meaning they will tackle priority one routes before returning to residential neighbourhoods.

“What we are putting out on roads is a “pickle” mixture of sand and salt to help give your vehicle a little bit more traction,” she says.

About 2,000 Enmax customers were without power for at least an hour in part of McKenzie Lake as well Monday morning.
