Northbound Deerfoot reopened after fatal pedestrian collision

A 46-year-old man is dead after being hit on Deerfoot Trail Monday afternoon.

It happened in the northbound lanes near Airport Trail around 12:40pm

Police say the man was driving a Ford F350 truck northbound on Deerfoot when he lost control on the icy roadway and slid into the post-and-wire barrier separating directional traffic on Deerfoot. When his vehicle stopped, he walked around the truck to assess the damage.

At the same time, a 54-year-old man driving a Pontiac Montana minivan also lost control on the ice, and the vehicle hit the man standing outside the Ford F350 near the travel lane.

The 46-year-old was rushed to hospital, but died from his injuries shortly after arrival.

Alcohol was not a factor in this collision, however; police believe speed and road conditions may have been a factor.

No decision has been made in relation to charges.

The northbound lanes of Deerfoot were closed for nearly 3.5 hours as police reconstructed the scene.

It’s the second time in as many days, police have closed down Deerfoot because of a crash.
